Hiriketiya and the South Coast

Hiriketiya is a horseshoe-shaped bay on Sri Lanka’s south coast, with surf, beachside cafés and plenty of reasons to spend the day outdoors. It’s a place where you can learn something new in the morning, stop for a leisurely lunch and still have time to relax back at the villa.

There are plenty of things to do in Hiriketiya and nearby Dikwella, whether you’re visiting with young children, travelling with friends or enjoying a holiday with several generations of the family. Here are a few ways to make the most of your stay at The Nest Sri Lanka.

Learn to Surf at Hiriketiya Beach

Surfing is a big part of life in Hiriketiya. Beginners can take lessons on the smaller waves closer to shore, while more experienced surfers head out to the reef break. There are surf instructors and board rentals along the beach, making it easy to organise a lesson during your stay.

If you’re new to surfing, an instructor can help you choose a suitable spot and understand the conditions. Family members who prefer to stay dry can settle into a beachside café and watch the action.

Explore the Coast and Look for Sea Turtles

A visit to Turtle Point is another way to enjoy the coastline around Dikwella. When sea conditions and visibility allow, snorkelling offers a chance to explore beneath the surface and perhaps spot a turtle in its natural habitat.

Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed, which makes an encounter all the more special. Give turtles plenty of space, avoid touching or feeding them, and check local conditions before entering the water.

Visit Blue Beach Island

Nearby Nilwella is home to Blue Beach Island, where a narrow sandbar connects the shore to a small island. It’s a beautiful setting for coastal views, photographs and a change of scenery from Hiriketiya Bay.

Access depends on the tide and sea conditions, so check before setting out across the sandbar. You can make this a relaxed outing rather than a full-day excursion, leaving time for other stops along the coast.

Discover Local Temples

For a break from the beach, explore the area’s Buddhist temples. Wewurukannala Viharaya in Dikwella is one option for visitors interested in local culture, with its large seated Buddha and detailed religious artwork.

Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and knees, and be prepared to remove your shoes in sacred areas. A temple visit offers a different perspective on the area beyond its beaches and cafés.

Make Time to Unwind

Your holiday doesn’t need to be filled with outings. An Ayurvedic massage can be a welcome addition to a slower day, particularly between beach trips and sightseeing.

Leave space in your plans for unhurried meals, time by the pool and afternoons with no particular agenda. Some of the best moments at The Nest are simply spent enjoying the villa together.
